Defense attorneys Candace Rader and Valerie Cooke of Carroll County, GA, have been charged with stealing a murdered man’s possessions. The two attorneys represented the man’s wife, Debra Post, when she was accused of killing him in 2002. According to the charges, Rader and Cooke knowingly took property that had belonged to Post’s late husband as payment for their legal services. Allegedly the stolen property was worth more than $320,000.
Rader and Cooke are being tried under Georgia’s “slayer’s statute,” which says that a person who commits murder cannot inherit anything from his or her victim. Post has confessed to her husband’s murder and is currently serving a life sentence.

Middlesex resident John Odgren was arrested early in January, 2007, and charged with stabbing fellow high school student James F. Alenson to death in an unprovoked attack. Alenson was fifteen at the time of the incident. Odgren’s trial, which was scheduled to begin this fall, has been delayed by the prosecution’s request to submitted tape recorded conversations between Odgren and his parents as evidence. The boy’s attorneys are maintaining that he was legally insane at the time of the attack; the prosecution claims that these phone calls, recorded while the boy was in prison shortly after his arrest, will make his mental stability clear to the jury.
In May Superior Court Judge Raymond Brassard ruled that the tapes were not admissible. The Supreme Judicial Court will be the next to weigh in on this matter.

Studies released recently by Human Rights Watch, the Sentencing Project and Minnesota’s Council on Crime and Justice all reached the same conclusion: although white and black people use illegal drugs at the same rate, black people are more likely to be arrested for this crime. They are also likely to receive harsher penalties. The largest gap between these two races was found in Wisconsin, where forty-two black people are imprisoned for drugs charges for every one white person.
